Marvelous Dualities
November 18, 2024 - January 19, 2025
Marisa Newman Projects is excited to present Marvelous Dualities, an innovative exhibition that celebrates the imaginative power of Surrealist collaboration. This show features the collective works of three visionary artists: Susana Wald, Ludwig Zeller, and Deborah Barnett. Together, they embrace the spirit of play and collaboration, tapping into the subconscious to create captivating artworks. Utilizing techniques such as Exquisite Corpse and Automatic Drawing and Collage they transform the creative process into a game of chance, surprise, and limitless imagination.
Focusing on Susana Wald, the exhibition highlights two of her collaborations: one with her longtime partner, Ludwig Zeller, and the other with her friend and student, Deborah Barnett. These partnerships approached the creative process in distinct ways. Wald and Zeller worked closely together on a series titled Mirages, striving for a seamless look as if crafted by a single hand. In contrast, Wald and Barnett followed the principles of Exquisite Corpse, refraining from looking at each other’s work while developing their drawing series. The three artists—each with distinct styles—create drawings that merge, clash, and complement one another in unexpected ways.
